Why YPs should get
involved with YPN in 2008

YPN At A Glance
The Chamber has 1,300 members representing almost 100,000 people. Many Chamber events like Business Before Hours and Business After Hours are great opportunities for YPs to make connections. Other programming is educational and informative. If your company is a member of The Chamber, many of these programs are complimentary or offered at a reduced fee.
COMMUNITY CORNER Programs are led by individuals from the local business community and are held one hour each week for a five to seven week time span. The programs are pre-developed and include detailed lesson plans for volunteers to follow. The Michiana chapter of Junior Achievement covers St. Joseph, Marshall and LaPorte counties in Indiana, and Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan. In 2007, a total of 313 programs involving 8,000 students were held at select schools within each of these counties. In 2008, the goal is to increase the number of programs to 350, with St. Joseph County accounting for the most growth. Although volunteers are needed at every level, the greatest need is currently for 5th grade, 6th grade and high school students. “Young professionals are good role models for students, particularly as they move up through the school system,” said Kelly Matti, president of Junior Achievement of Michiana. “It’s important for students to see that they can be successful even at a young age.” For more information on volunteering with Junior Achievement of Michiana, contact Kelly Matti at 269.983.7579 or kmatti@michianaja.org.
South Bend Common Council Seeks Citizen Members
In light of YPN’s upcoming February Lunch ‘N Learn on
personal budgeting, we’ve decided to take a look at radio talk show
host Dave Ramsey’s best-selling motivational book on how to gain
financial freedom. Anyone who has listened to Dave Ramsey’s radio
show knows he is a big proponent for becoming debt-free – a constant
theme throughout this book.
Saving
$1,000 as an emergency fund
Paying off
all debts
Building up
a six month emergency fund
Saving
for purchases
NEVER using
a loan
The beginning
of the book focuses on psychological hurdles to achieving financial
freedom, the first being denial that there is a problem. To tackle
one’s debt, Ramsey recommends listing out the balances on each
credit card or loan, then paying minimums on every one except the
one with the smallest balance. On the card with the smallest
balance, pay the most you can until it is wiped out and then go to
the next one.
The Total
Money Makeover is not a dry read at all. It’s a motivational
book designed to inspire you to achieve personal wealth. |
