150 YEARS OF BASEBALL
IN SOUTH BEND
Regarded as our national pastime, baseball has
played an important role in many communities
over the years—South Bend is no exception. The first baseball game to take place in South Bend was documented in 1860. Now, 150 years later, the sport continues to bring families and friends together thanks in large part to the establishment of our local minor league team, the South Bend Silver Hawks.

In 1985, it was announced that a stadium would be built in downtown South Bend with the goal to further economic redevelopment in the area. Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium, commonly referred to as “the Cove,” was
built in 1987 and hosted the home opener of the South Bend White Sox, a Class A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox, in April 1988. The team was renamed the South Bend Silver Hawks in 1994 as a tribute to the Studebaker Silver Hawk automobile. At the conclusion of their 1996 season, the Silver Hawks announced a new affiliation with the Arizona Diamondbacks, which continues to this day.
“Our
community is so fortunate to have a
locally-owned professional baseball team,” said
Amy Hill, YP and Silver Hawks director of marketing and community partnerships. “Our players, coaches and visiting teams provide a boost to the local economy while working hard to provide a positive, lasting impression.”

The author, a member of the Speaker Hall of Fame, drives home the point that genuine leadership is determined by how we influence the lives of those around us.
