READING CORNER

The Road to Serfdom
by Frederich von Hayek

It's amazing that this 60-year-old book is now a best seller, but its content is very relevant to our economic times and current events. An Austrian-born libertarian economist, Hayek made sweeping predictions based on economic and human behavioral theories.

Hayek's thesis is that central economic planning will inevitably lead to government control of every facet of its citizens' lives, and hence to a totalitarian state. It's no surprise that the book was banned in the Soviet Union, China and many other totalitarian countries. Hayek explains how extensive governmental control not only harms society by delivering poor economic results, but it also changes the psychological character of the people. Hayek elaborates on the following points:

  • Collectivism represents the undoing of liberalism (in the classic sense).

  • Socialism necessitates that the efforts of the populace be directed toward a common goal often called something like "the common good," and that the system must be planned to achieve this goal, and that liberty is sacrificed as a result.

  • A free society operates by the Rule of Law, but a socialist state is run by "arbitrary government."

  • Money promotes economic liberty to the individual.

  • True believers of a socialist state must hold the interests of the state higher than their own.

  • Socialism is inherently nationalistic or ethnocentric because the leading party must rally the populace against a threatening group in order to promote its own agenda.

It's a rather short book and an easy read, yet it is said to have had a major influence on such world leaders as Churchill, Thatcher and Reagan.
