OMG! UR BOSS IS UR FACEBOOK FRIEND?...The dos and don'ts of social networking

We’ve all been faced with the dilemma: A Facebook friend request from a co-worker. Someone who only knows you as an ambitious, hard-working young professional – not as the life of the party who happens to have some pretty sweet, albeit embarrassing, dance moves.

With the growing popularity of social networking comes the realization that what you do in your private leisure time isn’t so private anymore. So before you jump on the social media bandwagon and tweet your idea for this year’s Halloween costume, blog about your boss or post a photo of last weekend’s tailgate, pause and consider what kind of image you are portraying.

Mixing Business & Social Networks
Quick tips for either combining or dividing your professional and social networks:

• Communicate to your friends what is and isn’t appropriate
   to post to your profile.
• If you would prefer not to combine the two, consider
creating two Facebook accounts – one for your work friends
and one for your social friends.
• Don’t be “that person” at work. Monitor how much time you
spend on social networking sites while on the clock.
• Use your expertise to your advantage. Businesses are
quickly realizing the advantages social networking offers.
Dazzle your supervisors with your knowledge and show
how it can benefit your employer.

Job Searching?
Career Builder offers the following social networking tips for those seeking employment:

• Employers DO check job applicants' profiles on social
networking sites because they want to understand
   candidates better beyond the resume.
• Get rid of your “digital dirt."
• Update your profile regularly.
• Don’t mention your job search if you are currently
   employed.
• Don’t forget others can see your friends.
