COMMON
CENTS
At some point, most
of us have attended a session or two on
budgeting and personal finance. We’re often
encouraged to ask that all too honest question:
“Am I truly living within my means?” Regardless
of the answer, the following are some
considerations to help stretch your buck—or even
pocket it—in today’s economic climate:
-
Both NIPSCO and Indiana Michigan
Power allow you to
enroll in a budget plan that provides an
average monthly bill based on your
past usage and estimated future prices. Essentially, you pay the
same amount each month over the course of a year, which helps to
take the guesswork out of budgeting.
-
Install a
programmable thermostat. They’re inexpensive, easy to install and
better yet, cut down on your bill since you can preset the
temperature in your house at any given time. Visit
the NIPSCO Web site for information on
product rebates.
-
Put your negotiating skills to use!
Many competing service providers offer aggressive prices or
packages, some that become even more appealing if you
acknowledge that you’re considering various options.
-
Ask about lowering the interest
rate on your credit card(s). Credit companies often send notices
of low APRs relating to balance transfers and new purchases, but
they don’t always make known their ability to lower your rate on
outstanding balances. It never hurts to ask.
-
Before you hit the stores to make
that next big purchase, remember to check out EBay, Craig’s List
or even local garage sales. You may find a bargain that you
weren’t expecting.
Do you have a money-saving suggestion
to share with other YPs? If so, e-mail it to
Anneliese Woolford and we’ll share it in an upcoming newsletter.

The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership
By: John C. Maxwell
At the age of 51 and after more than 30 years in professional leadership positions, John Maxwell has had the privilege of teaching leadership across the country and around the globe. In this book, you’ll learn leadership skills that will carry you in all walks of life. Whether you are a follower who is just beginning to discover the impact of leadership or a natural leader who already has followers, you can become a better leader.
As you read, keep in mind four ideas:
-
The laws can be learned.
-
The laws can stand alone.
-
The laws carry consequences with them.
-
These laws are the foundation of leadership.
One gentleman who attended a seminar given by John Maxwell stated, “Your leadership laws have fueled my vision. They’ve given me the desire to learn more about leadership and accomplish my goals. If I’d learned these laws 20 years ago, I could have done some things that I had never even dreamed possible.”
