YPN 2008...
Happy New Year YPs! Whether you’re a YPN veteran or new to the group, we hope you take part in the upcoming events we have planned for 2008! As we start a new year, here is a quick look at where we came from and where we are headed!

YPN At A Glance
An initiative of The Chamber of Commerce of St. Joseph County, YPN was created to bring together the talents & insights of emerging young professionals, ages 21-39. Our mission is simple: To develop, connect and empower young professionals.

We currently have a contact database of more than 950 young professionals, representing more than 400 employers. There is no fee to be a member of YPN.

2008 Work Teams
The following work teams, made up of your colleagues, work to make YPN possible.

  • Large Events Team: Plans evening and signature events.

  • Lunch ‘N Learn Team: Plans and develops monthly lunch programs on various professional development topics.

  • Outreach Team: Conducts regular presentations at local employers and colleges to raise awareness about YPN and
    recruit YPs.
  • Marketing Team: Creates promotional pieces for events, communicates with local media and provides assistance to other teams to spread the YPN message.
  • Newsletter Team: Plans and writes what you are reading!
  • Civic Engagement: Works to create a link between local city and county government and YPs.
  • Community Connection: Finds community engagement opportunities for YPs by working with area non-profits, businesses and arts and culture organizations.
  • YPNConnect.com: Develops the YPN portal Web site (currently under construction) so that YPs can further network.

Together, YPN and The Chamber Impact
Local Business Professionals
Through its affiliation with The Chamber, YPN encourages YPs to take advantage of the numerous opportunities that The Chamber has to offer—many of which are cohesive with YPN’s mission to develop, connect and empower.

The Chamber has 1,300 members representing almost 100,000 people. Many Chamber events like Business Before Hours and Business After Hours are great opportunities for YPs to make connections. Other programming is educational and informative. If your company is a member of The Chamber, many of these programs are complimentary or offered at a reduced fee.

COMMUNITY CORNER
Junior Achievement of Michiana Seeking YP Volunteer Support

Junior Achievement is the largest non-profit economic education organization in the world, teaching students basic financial skills at the elementary, middle and high school levels. Each educational program is categorized under one of three main topics: entrepreneurship, economics and career and personal success.

Programs are led by individuals from the local business community and are held one hour each week for a five to seven week time span. The programs are pre-developed and include detailed lesson plans for volunteers to follow.

The Michiana chapter of Junior Achievement covers St. Joseph, Marshall and LaPorte counties in Indiana, and Cass and Berrien counties in Michigan. In 2007, a total of 313 programs involving 8,000 students were held at select schools within each of these counties. In 2008, the goal is to increase the number of programs to 350, with St. Joseph County accounting for the most growth.

Although volunteers are needed at every level, the greatest need is currently for 5th grade, 6th grade and high school students. “Young professionals are good role models for students, particularly as they move up through the school system,” said Kelly Matti, president of Junior Achievement of Michiana. “It’s important for students to see that they can be successful even at a young age.” For more information on volunteering with Junior Achievement of Michiana, contact Kelly Matti at 269.983.7579 or kmatti@michianaja.org.

READING CORNER
The Total Money Makeover
By Dave Ramsey

In light of YPN’s upcoming February Lunch ‘N Learn on personal budgeting, we’ve decided to take a look at radio talk show host Dave Ramsey’s best-selling motivational book on how to gain financial freedom. Anyone who has listened to Dave Ramsey’s radio show knows he is a big proponent for becoming debt-free – a constant theme throughout this book.

Ramsey’s plan entails:

  • Saving $1,000 as an emergency fund

  • Paying off all debts

  • Building up a six month emergency fund

  • Saving for purchases

  • NEVER using a loan

The beginning of the book focuses on psychological hurdles to achieving financial freedom, the first being denial that there is a problem. To tackle one’s debt, Ramsey recommends listing out the balances on each credit card or loan, then paying minimums on every one except the one with the smallest balance. On the card with the smallest balance, pay the most you can until it is wiped out and then go to the next one.

The Total Money Makeover is not a dry read at all. It’s a motivational book designed to inspire you to achieve personal wealth.
