Transportation
A quarter million strong,
the residents of St. Joseph County enjoy the quick, direct
routes to Chicago and Indianapolis. They enjoy having South
Bend Regional Airport, the only airport in the country that
includes on-site air, train and bus service, right in their
backyard. It’s this combination that has allowed the county
to become a hub for manufacturing and distribution,
connecting the area to national and overseas markets.
US 31/33 links the area
to Michigan and Indianapolis and connects to I-94, a direct
route to Chicago and Detroit. Interstate 80/90 (the Indiana
Toll Road), serves as a major, cross-country artery
providing a valuable east/west route, with three exits into
St. Joseph County. Highways intersecting the area include
State Roads 2, 4, 23, 933, 104 and 331 and US Roads 6 and
20.
The second busiest
airport in Indiana, South Bend Regional Airport is the
largest feeder to Chicago's O'Hare Airport and the sixth
largest feeder airport in the country overall. Five passenger
carriers (Allegiant Air, Continental, Delta, Northwest and United) provide access to several hub cities. In addition,
several carriers offer freight handling. Those seeking a
weekend or a day of business in Chicago can travel on the
Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad, the only
electric commuter line remaining in the United States. It
connects South Bend to the downtown Chicago "loop" daily.
Getting around South Bend/Mishawaka is just as easy, thanks
to Transpo, the municipal bus service.
